Study Permit

To study in Canada, you need a Study Permit and for most visa-required countries, a Visitor Visa. Study permit, also known as Student Visa, is a document issued by Immigration Canada to allow foreign students to study at a designated learning institution in Canada. When you get your letter of admission from the school that you’ll be attending, you can apply for a Study permit before you enter Canada.

 

Who can apply?

To apply for a Study Permit, you first need to apply for a program of study at a designated learning institution be admitted. Generally, universities and colleges will ask you to provide your previous education credentials and proof of language proficiency. Every program may also have its specific requirements. Once you submitted all the required documentation, your application will be evaluated, and if approved, you will get a Letter of Admission from the school you’re applying for, which can be used to further obtain the Study permit.

 

For Study Permit holder: Visitor Visa for return to Canada

Noted that a Study permit alone does not allow you to enter Canada. You will also need a temporary resident visa or an electronic travel authorization to enter the border. If you plan to leave Canada during a scheduled break, for example, travel back home for summer vacation, you will need to make sure that your travel documents is still valid.

 

Changing conditions or extend your stay

A study Permit is usually valid for the length of your program of study, plus an extra 90 days which allow you to leave Canada or extend your stay. Also, if any changes occur that may affect your study permit, for example, you are transferring to another school, or you can’t finish your courses before the date on your permit, you’ll have to notify CIC to either change conditions on your Study Permit or get a new one.

 

Financial Support

To financially support students in Canada, Canadian government has a variety of funding programs such as Student Loans. Learning institutions also offer different kinds of scholarships or funding packages. International Student may be eligible to apply for the funding.

 

Studying in Quebec: Certificat d’Acceptation du Québec (CAQ)

If you are a foreign student wish to study in Quebec, you need to apply for and obtain a Letter of Acceptation to study in Quebec (Certificat d’Acceptation du Québec), which is the so-called CAQ. You also need your CAQ to apply for the Study Permit.
